Our CEO has a quote posted on his computer monitor. The quote is, "A goal without a plan is just a dream." We speak about this concept frequently when we evaluate how we are doing as a company. It is very easy to get into a daily routine. We put our heads down and do our jobs. The problem with putting your head down is that you do not know where you are going.
How do you design a plan?
How can you use plans to effect an outcome?
First and foremost, you must have a specific goal. Once a goal is defined, you need to determine the best way to get there. This is a process not a definitive answer. If you believe you know exactly how to achieve a goal, you are destined for failure. The best one can do is develop an educated plan to achieve the goal. The whole process should be measurable. It should not only be measured by the goal but also by milestones that should indicate that you are heading in the right direction.
There is, often times, the scenario where things are going well and then you hit some bumps. You need to have the willingness to change or pivot. As I mentioned above, your plan is an educated guess. With that understanding, you should be willing to move into another direction if your milestones are not attained.
The process of planning, doing, checking and acting is cyclical. It will never stop and should never stop. A healthy business will evolve with the times. Creating a habit of planning for the future will insure that your company will be around to see that future.
